Eastern Prickly Pear is a perennial cactus native to the eastern United States where can often be found growing in prairies, meadows, and other dry areas.
Plant grows to about 6 inches in height and produces bright yellow flowers that bloom from June through July. After flowering, the pads produce bright red fruits that are nearly as attractive as the flowers!
Attracts numerous species of bees, beetles, and butterflies.
All parts of the plant are edible and have a long history of culinary use by Native American tribes. In Mexico, the pads are commonly found in grocery stores and the fruits are often used to make preserves.

Direct sow in late fall by lightly pressing the seeds into the soil's surface. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which should occur in 2 to 6 weeks.
