Amaranthus caudatus. 60 days. Open-pollinated.
Red Love Lies Bleeding, also known as Tassel Flower or Foxtail Amaranth, is an annual grain that has long been grown as an ornamental plant due to its showy red flowers and bright green leaves.
Plant grows to between 36 and 60 inches in height and produces long tassels of small, crimson, petal-free flowers that bloom from late spring to late summer.
Both the seeds and leaves of the plant are edible, though the introduction of nitrogen (through either fertilizer or fertilizer run-off) into the soil will cause the leaves to become high in nitrates that may be carcinogenic if consumed.
